Why were U.S. base military stores originally called "PX"?
Base military stores or Exchanges are commonly called a Base Exchange (BX) on U.S. Air Force installations, and they are referred to as a Post Exchange (PX) in the U.S. Army. Exchanges on Army and Air Force installations are run by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES). Every exchange operated by the AAFES has been rebranded simply as an Exchange to simplify differentiation between the similar sounding BX and PX names.

No. Not "named after," but short for. In the Air Force it's BX, short for "Base Exchange."

Most military still refer to them BX or PX depending on whether your on an Air Force Base or an Army Post.

Not according to the internet. And the military people I know always said it was because Army and Air Force ran them
