In 1891, James Naismith, a Canadian-American physical educator, drew up rules to a new game that his students could play indoors during the cold winter months. It engaged them to shoot a football into an empty basket that was originally used to store peaches. After brainstorming this new idea, Naismith developed the game of basketball and its 13 rules in Springfield, Massachusetts on December, 21 in 1891. This day was marked the first game of basketball ever played. By 1892, basketball had grown popular on campus. The editor-in-chief of the Triangle, the Springfield College's newspaper, featured it in an article called '' A New game ''. By 1893, basketball was introduced internationally by the YMCA movement. James Naismith was born on November 6, 1861, at Almonte, Ontario, province of Canada. He died on November 28, 1939, at Lawrence, Kansas, USA.
