‘A River Run Through It’ is a 1992 American drama movie, directed by Robert Redford (born 1936) based on the 1976 semi-autobiographical novella of the same name by Norman Maclean (1902-1990). The movie was filmed in and around the Montana city of Missoula.

The plot of the movie centers around two sons and their father, a Presbyterian minister. One son is very studious and the other rebellious. They grow up and come of age in the Rocky Mountain region during a span of time from roughly WWI to the early days of the Great Depression, including part of the Prohibition era.

Missoula is a city located along the Clark Fork River near its confluence with the Bitterroot and Blackfoot Rivers in western Montana. It is at the convergence of 5 mountain ranges. As a result, it is often described as the “hub of five valleys.”

In 2019, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the city’s population at 75,516 and the population of the metropolitan area was at 118,791. Two nicknames exist- The Garden City and The River City while the city’s motto is “The discovery continues”.

It was first founded and settled in 1858 as a trading post along the Rattlesnake Creek. The establishment of Fort Missoula in 1877 to protect settlers further stabilized the economy plus the the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1883 brought rapid growth and the maturing of the local lumbar industry.

Missoula is considered the cultural center of the state.
