A woman holding aloft a shining torch is the logo most associated with which film production company?
Columbia Pictures is one of the world’s most celebrated film production companies, which was established in 1918 as CBC Film Sales Corporation. Originally named after its founders, American studio was renamed in 1924 and today is the part of Sony Group.
The Columbia Pictures logo, featuring a woman carrying a torch and wearing a drape (representing Columbia, a personification of the United States), has gone through five major changes. It has often been compared to the Statue of Liberty, which was an inspiration to the Columbia Pictures logo.
The logo, used by the company today, was created in 1993 and featured an enlarged wordmark, set in two levels, with the emblem in its right. The lettering is executed in a strict geometric sans-serif, with the square shape of the letters and distinct bold lines.
Artist Michael Deas was hired and he then hired Jennifer Joseph, a graphics artist for The Times-Picayune, as a model for the logo. Due to time constraints, she agreed to help out on her lunch break.
