According to the United Nations, how many countries are there as of 2018?

There are 195 countries in the world today. This total comprises 193 countries that are member states of the United Nations and 2 countries that are non-member observer states: the Holy See (Vatican) and the State of Palestine.

Not included in this total count of 195 countries are:

Taiwan - the United Nations considers it represented by the People's Republic of China.

The Cook Islands and Niue, both states in free association with New Zealand which are members of several UN specialized agencies and have been recognized "full treaty-making capacity", but are neither member states nor non-member observer states.

Dependencies (or dependent territories) and Areas of Special Sovereignty (autonomous territories).

Other countries recognized by the United Nations as not being self-governing.

Of the 195 countries in the world 54 countries are in Africa, 48 in Asia, 44 in Europe, 33 in South America and the Caribbean, 14 in Oceania and 2 in North America.

This information is far from accurate. There are not only 2 countries in North America. The region we call Central America is part of the North American continent. There are 7 coutries there from Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Nicaragua, and San Salvador. Then there is Mexico, the US, Canada, and Greenland, plus various island nations in the Caribbean. Who vetted this information?

Steve Tingle, it would be an understatement to say that China's human rights record leaves a great deal to be desired. However, to my knowledge, in our time China has taken over just one country, namely Tibet. Compare that with some western powers. You could start with Diego Garcia.

Back in the late 1970s I worked for a freight forwarder, out of JFK Airport, that handled the 8 export shipping for the United Nations Traffic Unit. The Traffic Unit handled the personal effects of the diplomats coming and going into New York. I have shipped to 119 countries for United Nations. I knew the number had to be more than 119.
