The American actor best known for his role as Charley Dietz in the sitcom "Empty Nest" (1988 to 1995) and for being the fictional automotive "pitch man" Joe Isuzu was David Leisure. David was in a series of North American TV commercials for Isuzu Automobiles from 1986 to 1990 and again from 1999 to 2001.

Leisure was born in November 1950 in San Diego, CA. While studying drama at Grossmont College and San Diego State University, Leisure became sure that acting was for him. After his graduation, he went to work for two seasons in San Diego in the theater production of Feiffer's "The Trial of the Catonsville 9". He later performed in "The Boys in the Band", "Pal Joey", and "Lenny." Once he moved to Los Angeles, he made his big screen debut as a Hare Krishna devotee in the hit comedy film "Airplane!"

Next, he was able to appear in more than 60 TV commercials. His best had him in the Isuzu automobile commercials in the role of the inveterate liar, "Joe Isuzu". This name turned into Leisure's popular nickname.

In 1988 Joe Isuzu was so well known in America that Michael Dukakis, in a debate with George H. W. Bush during their U.S. presidential election campaign, said, "If Bush keeps it up, he's going to be the Joe Isuzu of American politics."
