Guinea-Bissau, officially the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, is a sovereign state in West Africa. It covers 36,125 square kilometres (13,948 sq mi) with an estimated population of 1,815,698.

The official language of Guinea-Bissau is Portuguese. Portuguese is spoken by 11% of the population. French is also learned in schools, as Guinea-Bissau is surrounded by French-speaking countries and is a full member of the Francophonie as well as the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. Guinea-Bissau Creole is spoken by 44% of the population. Native languages include Balanta, Fula, Mandjak, Mandinka and Papel.

Because of its long colonial history, the official language of Guinea-Bissau remains Portuguese. During this time it was the principal language of government administration and national communications. The individuals who speak Portugese represent the most elite and highly educated of the country. Because of its limited range, today, Portuguese is spoken primarily as a second language, and its use is concentrated around the capital.
