Andrew Jackson's controversial Indian Removal Act paved the way for The Trail of Tears. It was estimated that many died from hunger, exposure and disease. What would that estimated number be?
The journey became a cultural memory as the "trail where they cried" for the Cherokees & other removal tribes. Today it is widely remembered by the general public as the "Trail of Tears".The National Historic Trail is about 2,200 miles long.
What are your thoughts on this subject?

What gives anyone the right to displace people from their own lands? I can never get my head round the fact that this has been happening for such a long time...

Another shameful act by land-stealing white men. This was akin to genocide, especially after supplying these people with small pox tainted blankets.
We continue to steal from and force our way on native Americans. Look how we treat them on their sovereign lands to push through polluting pipelines.

Removed Indians who were property owners and more educated than most of the white people in the area

All of You bemoaning the fact that this happened in America need to read a History book. This has happened throughout History, not just in America! That doesn't mean that it was right, simply not unique.

FYI - the other tribes were Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw and Seminole Indians. It is a shame the other tribes are rarely mentioned! I am half Creek so I know this history.

What we don't understand, we fear, what we fear we destroy. The cycle continues through out the history of man.

Lest we forget the sins against my people.

L Lh Adams, No kidding? I guess I thought that was a fact universally acknowledged and therefore went without saying. 🙄

There were an estimated 4000 Cherokee alone who died. PLUS many more. - more than that collectively - that died from other . I believe the estimate totally was nearly 37000.

Ron Garfinkle,
I thought that was a sin .But I also wonder why we didn't treat the German people in this country like we treated Japanese . Put them in the same kind of camps that we did to the Japanese people . German citizens living in Germany committed the worse atrocities in the history civilize mankind.
Then we brought them back to our country. to become scientist , doctors, successful businessman . I guess it always comes down to who can make the most money for you . Must be easy to forget about the families of the dead service man.. Of course everything is forgiven and forgotten at the end of the war .

The Seminoles were dragged from Florida to Oklahoma, and resettled on "worthless" land that had big deposits of oil underneath. Served those heartless white guys right!!

Char, he said it didn't make it right. He also said it three years ago.

This is wrong. 10,000 to 20,000 of all tribes died of all causes.

Janice Lea Vanlandingham, you really don't understand what has been done against Native Americans. To this day it is still happening. Firstmost we are of this land. The Genocides have been happening for the longest time but no one dates to talk about it. The Navajos faced and endured the long walk.

Margaret O'Neill, I suppose you think that we should give the Mexican people back, the land that was "stolen" from them, California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah... I was told back in 1968 that the Mexicans were going to recover all that was stolen from them ..by hook or by crook.
