Apart from golf, which sport has been played on the moon?
Most people know that astronaut Alan Shepard (1923-1998) took a golf club to the moon when he was one of the crew of the Apollo 14 mission that launched on the 31st of January, 1971. The mission had been awaited with some trepidation, as it followed the high drama and near tragedy of the Apollo 13 mission, but it seems that as well as carrying out important scientific research, the crew were also determined to have a little fun!
After Shepard had indulged in his famous golf swing, his colleague Edgar Mitchell (1930-2016) took hold of the handle of a lunar scoop and launched it into the air like a javelin. He was later to boast that it carried further than Shepard's golf ball.
Happily, this mission ended safely and without any drama, and touched down in the Pacific Ocean as planned on the 9th of February.
