Approximately how many people attended the Woodstock music festival between August 15-18, 1969?
Woodstock was a music festival held on a dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains, northwest of New York City, scheduled between August 15-17, 1969. Actually the festival ran over to August 18th. It attracted an audience of more than 400,000.
The genre of music included rock and folk, including blues rock, folk rock, jazz fusion, hard rock, Latin rock and psychedelic rock. Billed as 'An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace and Music', it was held at Max Yasgur's 600-acre dairy farm near White Lake in Bethel, New York, 43 miles (70 km) southwest of Woodstock.
Over the sometimes rainy weekend, 32 acts performed outdoors. Some of the performers included Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Joe Cocker to list of few. It is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in popular music history, as well as the definitive nexus for the larger counterculture generation. In 2017, the festival site was listed on the 'National Register of Historic Places'.
In 1984, a plaque was placed at the original site commemorating the festival. The field and the stage area remain preserved in their rural setting and the fields of the Yasgur Farm are still visited by people of all generations.
While plans were initially considered to again host a festival at the same site, Michael Lang, one of the original producers and organizers, announced that the official 'Woodstock 50th anniversary Festival' would take place in August 16-18, 2019 in Watkins Glen, NewYork. As of May 1, 2019 it has now been cancelled.
