Within the existing system of classification, there are approximately 3,400 snake species around the world today.

This is an approximate number because scientists and experts disagree about which snakes should be a sub-species, which should be a primary species, and other key factors relating to the classification of types of snakes. Additionally, knowledge of the natural world is constantly evolving. Also, new discoveries, and new ways of thinking about old discoveries, have changed the way people look at snakes.

Twenty years ago, there were less than 3,000 recognized species of snakes. In 2019, largely as the result of sub-species being reclassified as a species of their own, there are now about 3,400 species.
