Austria-Hungary (or Austro-Hungarian Empire) developed a language, primarily based on Czech, consisting of about 80 words in order to aid in communicating among the soldiers serving the Austro-Hungarian army. Two of the official languages were German and Hungarian (a third official language was Croatian), but nearly half of the soldiers serving in the army prior to World War I didn't speak any of those languages.

The Austrian Empire was formed in 1806 following the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, then became Austria-Hungary in 1867 following the Austro-Prussian War. Austria-Hungary was a multiethnic empire that included subjects that spoke Italian, Polish, Serbian, Romanian, Slovenian, Slovakian and Czech and other languages. Army Slavic was used until Austria-Hungary itself was dissolved following World War I.
