The longest ice skating trail measures 29.98 km (18.63 miles) and it is the naturally frozen Lake Windermere Whiteway, in Invermere, British Columbia, Canada, as measured on 14 February 2014.

The Guinness World Records listing calls Ottawa’s Rideau Canal the world’s largest outdoor rink, an assertion supported by both the Nature Conservancy of Canada and Wikipedia (though qualified for some reason by Ottawa Tourism as largest “naturally frozen” outdoor rink).

At 7.8 kilometres, the Ottawa rink was also the longest, until Winnipeg shovelled a 9.3-km corridor along the Assiniboine and Red rivers in 2008.

Then in 2013, Lake Windermere Whiteway at Invermere, B.C., took the title for a skating trail extending almost 30 km.

Muskegon's ice skating trail is only 1/4 mile long but it is one small part of a complex which features numerous winter activities; skating on an ice rink or the ice trail, luge runs, cross country skiing, sledding and snow shoeing.

The photo is actually a 425 meter (1/3 mile) ice skating path at Valen’s Lake, Hamilton, ON.
