British new wave band Duran Duran's energetic, danceable A View To A Kill, the title track from the 1985 James Bond film of the same name, reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. It remained there for two weeks (July 13 and July 20). It is the only theme from a Bond movie to reach No. 1. Coincidentally, the song was No. 2 for three weeks in the United Kingdom.

Duran Duran (Andy Taylor, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, Nick Rhodes and Simon LeBon) wrote the song along with Bond composer John Barry. They recorded the song in London with the aid of a 60-piece orchestra.

How the band got the song in the first place is a story of legends. Band bassist John Taylor was a life-long James Bond fan. One night at a party, a drunken Taylor went up to Bond producer Cubby Broccoli and said, "When are you going to get someone decent to do one of your theme songs?"

This led to serious talks, then the band and Barry sitting down to write.

LeBon said all Barry did was take most of the music the band had already worked on for the theme, rearranged a few things and added some chords. The entire song was completed in April of 1985 and released in May of that year.

In 1986, Barry and Duran Duran were nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for "A View to a Kill".

For Your Eyes Only (Sheena Easton) peaked at No. 4. Nobody Does It Better (Carly Simon) and Live and Let Die (Paul McCartney & Wings) both peaked at No. 2.
