In 2018, the two biggest shopping malls in South America were both located in Bogotá, Colombia

If you’re looking to shop ‘til you drop, (or your feet fall off, whichever comes first) in South America, look no further than Bogotá, Colombia’s Centro Mayor. With more than 280,000 m2 (3.2 million sf) of retail space, this shopping mall in the southern part of the Colombian capital became the largest in South America when it opened in 2010. Centro Mayor contains a variety of shops including four large anchor stores; oddly enough, three of the four are Chilean retailers.

Centro Mayor offers a selection of 430 stores, but if for some strange reason you can’t find what you’re looking for, just head across town to the Centro Comercial Santafé; it boasts 250,000 m2 (2.7 million sf) of shops and is South America’s second largest mall.

São Paulo and Santiago are home to the third and fourth largest malls In South America. In Brazil, Centro Comercial Aricanduva encompasses 247,000 m2 (2.66 million sf), while Costanera Center in Chile covers 172,000 m2 (1.85 million sf). Quicentro Sur Shopping in Quito, Ecuador rounds out the top five biggest malls of the continent at 160,000 m2 (1.7 million sf).

Despite their mind-boggling size, none of the South American shopping malls come close to the world’s largest mall. Dubai Mall has over 1.11 million m2 (12 million sf) of retail space. Pack a lunch and take a bottle of water; you may have trouble finding your car.
