Michelin stars ❋❋❋ are a rating system used by the Michelin Guide to rate restaurants on their quality. The guide was originally developed in 1900 in France to show drivers where local amenities such as restaurants and mechanics were. The rating system was first introduced in 1926 as a single star, with the second and third stars introduced in 1933.

According to the Guide, one star ❋ means "a very good restaurant", two stars ❋❋ are "excellent cooking that is worth a detour ", and three stars ❋❋❋ mean" exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey ". The listing of starred restaurants is updated once a year. In 2006 Michelin gave their first three stars awards ever in the United States to two New York City restaurants, they were Per Se and The Bernardin.

Finding the exact number of three-star Michelin restaurants in 2019 in the USA can be tricky, Wikipedia says 14, the Robb Report says 15. Michelin customer support was contacted directly for their help and they replied; "Thank you for your inquiry. If you check our global site, as of 2019 there are 14; ❋❋❋ 3-star Michelin restaurants in the United States."
