There are currently a total of 69 cities in the United Kingdom: 51 in England, seven in Scotland, six in Wales, and five in Northern Ireland. Of these, 23 in England, two in Wales, and one in Northern Ireland have Lord Mayors and four in Scotland have Lord Provosts.
England has 51 cities, 45 of which have been formalised as cities through the granting of Letters Patent, issued by various monarchs of England through the ages. The cities of Durham, York, London, Exeter, Winchester & Canterbury have not been issued with Letters Patent. It has not been necessary. They have been regarded as cities since Time Immemorial (can be defined as ‘a time in the past that was so long ago that people have no knowledge or memory of it’).
