The Australian one-dollar coin was first issued on May 14,1984 to replace the one-dollar note which was then in circulation. That first year there were 186.3 million coins produced at the Royal Mint in Canberra, the country’s capital.

Three portraits of Queeen Elizabeth II have been featured on the obverse: the 1984 head of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin; between 1985 and 1998, the head by Raphael Maklouf; and since 1999, the head by Ian Rank-Broadley. The coin features an inscription on its obverse of AUSTRALIA on th right-hand side and ELIZABETH II on the left-hand side.

The reverse sided features five kangaroos. The image was designed by Stuart Devlin (1931 - 2018), who designed Australia’s first decimal coins in 1966. He was an Australian artist and metalworker who specialized in gold and silver. He designed coins for countries around the world.
