As of 2020, in which country is the world’s longest pier located?
As of 2020, the world's longest pier extends 6.5 kilometers (4 miles) out into the ocean. This pier is named the ‘Progreso Pier’ located in the Mexican state of Yucatán.
Progreso is a port city approximately 30 minutes north of the state capital Merida. The pier extends out into the Gulf of Mexico. Originally it was a disembarkation pier built for ships to unload cargo. It has also become a popular cruise ship stop and in 2014, more than 1,000 cruise ships and over 344,000 passengers arrived at the Progreso Pier to visit the city.
Historically, the oldest segment of the pier, the segment closest to the shore, was constructed between the years 1937 and 1941-42, built upon arches to allow sediment to pass underneath. In 1985 the pier was extended 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) to accommodate larger ships docking at this location.
The longest pier is also the very first concrete structure that was built using nickel-containing stainless steel reinforcement.
