As of 2020, which country has appeared in three World Cup football/soccer match finals but has never won?
The history of the Netherlands national football team began when they played their first international match on 30 April 1905 in Antwerp against Belgium. The Dutch made their first appearance at the World Cup in 1934, Italy. As of 2020, they hold the record for playing the most World Cup finals without ever winning the tournament. They finished second in the 1974, 1978 and 2010 World Cups, losing to West Germany, Argentina and Spain respectively. They won the European Championship in 1988.
Beginning in 1930 with the first World Cup championship tournament and through 2018, Uruguay captured two early titles but none since 1950. England won its treasured lone title in 1966 and hasn't been back to the title match since. Meanwhile, the Spanish national football team, in its only appearance, captured its one title more recently in the 2010 World Cup. The football team from Brazil has won the World Cup a record five times out of seven tries in the finals.
The next World Cup football tournament is scheduled to be hosted by Qatar in 2022.
