Since January 9, 2006, by both number of performances and years, "The Phantom of the Opera" holds the title as the longest and most performed show on Broadway. Premiering on January 26, 1988 and currently running at the Majestic Theatre in New York, the show has won 7 Tony's and 7 Drama Desk Awards.

It has been in continuous performance, approaching 30 years, and still counting. It has been performed over 12,000 times since 1988.

The stage version is based on the novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux. The stage musical was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and the lyrics were written by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe. The story revolves around Christine Daaé, a soprano opera singer, who has captured the heart of a disfigured musical genius, who lives underground beneath the Opera Garnier (Palais Garnier).
