Water is necessary for life and is undisputedly the most-consumed drink in the world. It is also the main ingredient in most of the other beverages we drink.

Whether bitter, nutty, or sweet, tea is the second-most-consumed beverage in the world. Commonly prepared by pouring hot or boiling water over cured leaves, the centuries-old drink is said to have health benefits. It is extremely popular across Asia and in the U.K. Even Americans consume a lot of tea - over 3.8 billion gallons (144 billion liters) a year. Although it’s usually served hot elsewhere, statistics show that about 80% of the tea consumed in the U.S. is iced.

Coffee takes third place. Like tea, it is a brewed beverage. Coffee beans are native to Africa, but are now cultivated in at least 70 countries world-wide. Whether coffee was first consumed in Ethiopia or Yemen is still debated. As with tea, people drink coffee either hot or iced, depending on individual preference and the season.

Orange juice (coming in fourth) is the most popular of all the fruit juices. Whether it comes from fresh oranges or concentrate, the beverage is an excellent source of Vitamin C.

Also centuries-old, beer is made by fermenting hops, grains and other ingredients with yeast. It is the most commonly consumed alcoholic beverage in the world. Almost any substance containing sugar can naturally undergo alcoholic fermentation, and can thus be utilized in the brewing of beer, which in part explains the many varieties available.
