Located 15,091 feet (4600 meters) above sea level, the ‘Hotel Tayka del Desierto’ (Tayka Desert Hotel) in Bolivia is built out of the volcanic rock of the Mars-like landscape of the Siloli Desert.

The small lodge is literally in the middle of nowhere. It accommodates up to 47 guests in basic but comfortable rooms. There are solar panels on the roof that generate electricity and provide hot water in the evenings. The property was built by four local families and is in harmony with its environment, offering friendly service and local food.

Ideally located for visits to the lagoons of the region, the Hotel del Desierto is actually the only real option in the area. It is surrounded by some of Bolivia’s most notable geological features, being just 40 minutes from Laguna Colorada (a red salt lake inhabited by flamingos), Laguna Verde (Green Lake) and a volcanic geyser field known as ‘Sol de Mañana’ (Morning Sun).

If you guessed Nepal, you were close. Coming in second on the list of highest-altitude hotels, at just under 14,000 feet (4,267 meters), is Yeti Mountain Home Kongde in Nepal. It consists of a group of 14 cozy rooms, nestled deep in the Nepalese Himalayas. Each room features sweeping views of the world’s five highest mountains, including Everest and K2. The hotel is situated on a world famous trekking route in the Khumbu/Everest region, and serves as a popular resting place for those wanting to brave (or recover from) a climb up Mount Everest.
