After 19 seasons with the Utah Jazz, point guard John Stockton (b. March 26,1962) retired from basketball with the all-time career records in both steals (3,265) and assists (15,806 - over 3,000 more than 2nd place Jason Kidd.). Stockton spent his entire National Basketball Association (NBA) career with the Jazz; the team made it to the playoffs in each season he played (1984-2003).

He has been called the "ultimate team player" and the "best point guard ever in the half-court," and his longtime teammate Karl Malone said, "There absolutely, positively, will never ever be another John Stockton - ever."

Stockton played ball at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, and was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 1917. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame twice: first in 2009 for his individual career, then again in 2010 as a member of the 1992 United States Olympic basketball team. His number (12) has been retired, a street in Salt Lake City, Utah is named after him, and there is a statue of his likeness outside the arena where he played his entire NBA career.

*The 1992 United States men's Olympic basketball team, nicknamed the "Dream Team", was the first American Olympic team to feature active professional NBA players. It has been called the greatest sports team ever assembled, having defeated its opponents by an average of 44 points. The team’s closest match was their final Olympic-Gold-Winning (117–85) victory over Croatia.
