In Rio de Janiero, Brazil, a water slide known as ‘Kilimanjaro’ is considered the tallest in the world. Like the mountain it's named after, the body slide, which is located at the ‘Aldeia das Águas’ (Water Village) water park near Rio de Janeiro, towers over its surroundings.

Measuring 163 ft 0.07 inches (49.9 m) tall, the body slide opened in 2002; as of March 29, 2021 it was still officially the world's tallest waterslide. The creators of the slide dug into the earth to safely extend the drop.

Riders can expect to reach speeds of up to 60 miles per hour as they take the plunge down a 60-degree incline. Nearly one-third of people who go to the top of the slide chicken out and decide against taking the plunge. Those not feeling brave enough to ride the slide can still get a bird's eye view of the action from a tropical-themed bridge, which crosses over the slide.

‘Verrückt’ (German for "crazy" or "insane") was a water slide located at the Schlitterbahn Kansas City water park in Kansas City, Kansas, USA. At a height of 168 feet 7 inches (51.38 m), Verrückt became the world's tallest water slide when it opened in July of 2014, as it surpassed Kilimanjaro by about 4 ft (1.22 m). However, Verrückt was permanently shut down in August of 2016 following a fatal incident; the closure returned the crown to Kilimanjaro.
