On August 25, 1922, the Chicago Cubs defeated the visiting Philadelphia Phillies 26-23, despite a Phillies rally in the top of the ninth (last) inning that yielded six runs. The total of 49 runs scored in a single game still stands as the MLB record. In baseball, a run scores when a runner legally crosses home plate before the third (last) out of the half inning.

On September 6, 1883, the Chicago White Stockings set the record for the most runs scored in a single inning, 18 in the seventh, coming back from a three-run, first-inning deficit to best the Detroit Wolverines, 26-6. The Boston Red Sox have the Modern Era (which started with the 1900 season) record of 17, which they scored against the Detroit Tigers in the seventh inning on June 18, 1953, in a 23-3 victory.

On June 29, 1897, the Chicago Colts established the record for most runs in a game, as they beat the Louisville Colonels, 36-7. The White Stockings were re-named the Colts, which were re-named the Cubs. The team always played in the National League and always represented Chicago. By scoring 30 runs against the Baltimore Orioles on August 22, 2007, the Texas Rangers hold the Modern Era (which started with the 1900 season) record.
