Barbra Streisand (b. April 1942), an American singer, actress, and filmmaker from Brooklyn, New York, NY, did not sing the hit single "Wind Beneath My Wings". She did sing the songs "The Way We Were" (1974), "Evergreen" (1976), and "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" (1978).

"Wind Beneath My Wings" (sometimes titled "The Wind Beneath My Wings" and "Hero") is a song that was written in 1982 by Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley.

This song was first recorded by the Australian singer Kamahl in 1982 for a country/ western album. Kamahl talked about being the first to record the song in an appearance on the Australian TV show "Spicks and Specks". He stated that it was not released because his producers felt he did not suit the country/western style. Instead, Roger Whittaker recorded the song, as well as Sheena Easton and Lee Greenwood. The song appeared in charted versions by Colleen Hewett (1982), Lou Rawls (1983), Gladys Knight & the Pips (1983), and Gary Morris (1983).

To date, the highest-charted version of the song was recorded in 1988 by Bette Midler for the soundtrack to the 1988 comedy-drama "Beaches". This version was released as a single in early 1989 and spent one week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in June 1989. It won Grammy Awards for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year in February 1990.

Midler said, "If you or I say someone or something is “the wind beneath our wings” it means they are a support system and without them we can't succeed."
