In the early 1970s, CBS television executives were looking for a way to get younger viewers, teenagers, and young adults hooked on viewing an afternoon soap opera. They decided to create a new soap opera with a younger, hipper, cooler cast of characters. They called their new series, which debuted on March 26, 1973, “The Young and the Restless”. The show's writers centered the story-lines on two fictitious families in the fictitious town of Genoa City, Wisconsin. The town’s wealthy Brooks family was balanced against the working-class, blue-collar Foster family.

From 1974 to 1975, Tom Selleck appeared on the "Y&R" soap opera. He played a book editor who was helping one of the Brooks sisters publish their book, “In My Sister’s Shadow”.
