Burnside Skatepark in Portland, Oregon, was featured in which 1993 movie?
Burnside Skatepark is a local skater hangout under the east side of the Burnside Bridge in Portland, OR. It was built without any permission but was soon accepted and approved by the city of Portland. It is the skatepark that was featured in the 1993 film "Free Willy".
Today, many modern skatepark designs of the Pacific Northwest can be traced back to Burnside Skatepark in Portland. This skatepark was a DIY ("Do it yourself") barge build beneath Portland's Burnside Bridge. Skateboarders at the time used an area populated primarily by the city's "undesirable elements" to create a skatepark.
The director, writer, and actors of the movie "Free Willy" found that by using Burnside Skatepark as a back drop for some of the movie segments it helped to provide greater authenticity to the entire film.
