Which restaurant is not only San Francisco's oldest, but also California's oldest restaurant? Tadich Grill is the answer. This place which opened in 1849 is believed to be the third oldest continuously running restaurant in the U.S. It is preceded only by Boston's Union Oyster House (1826) and New Orlean's Antoine's Restaurant (1840). At the time that Tadich Grill started as a business, California wasn't even a U.S. state.

In 1849, Nikola Budrovich, Frano Kosta, and Antonio Gasparich, three immigrants from Croatia, set up a tent on Long Wharf and posted a sign. The sign read Coffee Stand. Long Wharf was a pier that reached half a mile into the Bay. Hundreds of sailing ships were tied up at this pier. It was a pier that was lined with hastily built shops, saloons, markets, and gambling dens. The Coffee Stand served fresh fish grilled over charcoal which is claimed to be the first place to grill seafood over mesquite charcoal. Merchants, sailors, and adventurers would eat here. This is how the Tadich Grill first began.

Today, Tadich Grill is basically a 166 year old seafood restaurant serving the residents, visitors, and other guests of the city of San Francisco. Unlike some popular and historic restaurants, it's still said that "Tadich Grill is not so noisy that you can't have a conversation with your companions. Now and even a century ago, it would hardly have been any different. Back then, customers left happy and returned frequently, just like they still do."
