Claude Rains played the two screen roles of Dryden, a cynical British diplomat in "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) and King Herod the Great in "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (1965), his last film.

Rains was a British-American film and stage actor whose career spanned almost seven decades. He was born in November 1889 in Clapham, London, England, lived for 77 years, and died in May 1967 from an abdominal hemorrhage in Laconia, New Hampshire, United States.

His American film debut was Dr. Jack Griffin in "The Invisible Man (1933)". He is highly regarded for his role in "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938), "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939), "The Wolf Man" (1941), "Casablanca" and "Kings Row" (both 1942), "Notorious" (1946), "Lawrence of Arabia" and "The Greatest Story Ever Told".
