Crowfoot was the maiden name of which English winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry?
Dorothy Hodgkin, née Crowfoot (1910-1994), was a British chemist, credited with the development of protein crystallography. Hodgkin received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1964.
Hodgkin was born in Cairo, Egypt but moved to England when World War l started. She stayed in England for the rest of her life and became a teacher at Somerville College, University of Oxford, where she was able to use computer technology to discover the structure of Insulin, a protein in the body that is used to treat diabetes. She also advanced the technique of X-ray crystallography, for which she won a Nobel Prize in 1964. As well as the Nobel Prize, she was given the Copley Medal, the top award of the Royal Society.
In 1937, Dorothy married Thomas Lionel Hodgkin and took his surname. They had three children, Luke (1938-2020), Elizabeth (born 1941) and Toby (born 1946). Her best-known student was Margaret Thatcher, the future Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
