Desi Arnaz was born on March 2, 1917 in Santiago de Cuba to a prominent Cuban family. His father was the youngest mayor of Santiago and served in the Cuban House of Representatives. His maternal grandfather was an executive at Bacardi Rum. The family had extensive land holdings and lived in luxury. This prominence ended when Fulgencio Batista overthrew President Gerardo Macchado, an ally of the family. His father was imprisoned and all his property confiscated. Released after six months, the family fled to Miami, where despite difficulties, Arnaz was to succeed wildly in show business. Batista, himself, ruled until 1944, when he retired to Florida. He returned to Cuba in 1952 to run for office. Facing certain defeat, he again gained power through another coup d'etat. Batista was subsequently forced from power by Fidel Castro.
