The 1956 film "Written on the Wind", an American Southern Gothic melodrama film, was based on Robert Wilder's 1947 novel "Written on the Wind". The film follows the dysfunctional family members of a Texas oil dynasty, including the complicated relationships among its alcoholic heir; his wife, a former secretary for the family company; his childhood best friend; and his ruthless, self-destructive sister. Douglas Sirk directed this film and Albert Zugsmith produced it. The screenplay was written by George Zuckerman. It stars Rock Hudson, Lauren Bacall, Robert Stack, and Dorothy Malone. Other members in the film's cast include: Dorothy Malone, Robert Keith, Grant Williams, Jasper Hadley, Robert J. Wilke, Edward Platt, Harry Shannon, John Larch, and Roy Glenn.

"Written on the Wind" was nominated for three Academy Awards. It only won for Best Supporting Actress (Malone); it lost for Best Supporting Actor (Stack) and Best Song ("Written on the Wind" by Victor Young and Sammy Cahn). The film became both a critical and financial success.
