Wayne Gretzky, considered by many to be the greatest hockey player ever, led the Edmonton Oilers to four Stanley Cup championships in nine seasons with the club before being traded to the Los Angeles Kings. Gretzky is the league's all-time leading scorer, a nine-time Hart Trophy winner (NHL MVP) and was also the general manager for two gold-medal winning Canadian Olympic hockey teams.

In his tenure with Edmonton, the Oilers were shutout only nine times in 738 regular season games. The team went four seasons where they scored in every game. The Oilers were blanked three times in the 1980-81 campaign. Their worst shutout was an 11-0 shellacking by the Hartford Whalers (now the Carolina Hurricanes) in the 1983-84 season.

The Columbus Blue Jackets hold the NHL record for being shutout in a season. The expansion team was blanked 16 times in 2006-2007.
