"Lassie" is a fictional female Rough Collie dog and is featured in a 1938 short story by Eric Knight that was later expanded to a 1940 full-length novel, "Lassie Come-Home".

The novel was adapted into a film by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1943 as "Lassie Come Home", there would be six other MGM feature films through 1951 including "Son of Lassie", "Courage of Lassie", "Hills of Home", "The Sun Comes Up", "Challenge to Lassie"and "The Painted Hills". In 1963 "Lassie's Great Adventure", a TV film ws released which was a film compilation of television episodes. In 1978 "The Magic of Lassie" was released. From 1994 to 2005 there were two films released with the title "Lassie". In 2020 "Lassie Comes Home" was released.

"Lassie" continues to make personal appearances as well as marketing a line of pet food and a current pet care TV show, Lassie's Pet Vet on PBS stations in the United States.

Despite the fact that Lassie is supposed to be a female dog, the character has always been portrayed by male collies.
