The Kalevala is an epic poem compiled by the Finnish folklorist Elias Lonnrot, gathered from Finnish and Karelian (an area comprising parts of Finland and Russia) oral folklore and mythology. It was first published in 1835, and is widely credited with shaping both the Finnish identification and its language.

It is regarded as the national epic of both Finland and Karelia and is thought to be a major factor leading to Finland's independence from Russia in 1917. It consists of 22,795 verses divided into 50 songs. It can be translated as "The Land of Kalevia".
