Gabriel Byrne did not have a acting role in the 1987 American crime film "The Untouchables". This is an action crime drama which has been set in the 1930s, during Prohibition. The notorious gangland kingpin Al Capone is supplying illegal liquor and has nearly gained full control of Chicago. Bureau of Prohibition agent Eliot Ness has been tasked with halting Capone's activities, but his first attempt at a liquor raid fails due to corrupt policemen tipping Capone off.

The film was directed by Brian De Palma and was produced by Art Linson. The screenplay was written by David Mamet, based on "The Untouchables" by Eliot Ness and Oscar Fraley. The film stars Kevin Costner, Charles Martin Smith, Andy García, Robert De Niro, and Sean Connery. Patricia Clarkson as Ness' wife, Billy Drago as Nitti, Richard Bradford as Mike, Jack Kehoe as Payne, and Brad Sullivan as George are all featured in key supporting roles.

It is also important to note that while the film is based on historic events, most of the film is inaccurate or fictional. Theatrically and commercially, the critical response to the film was a major success. It grossed $106.2 million at the box office against a budget of $25 million.
