In the 2001 psychological crime thriller film "Hannibal", directed by Ridley Scott and based on the 1999 novel "Hannibal" by Thomas Harris, Gary Oldman had an acting role. The film, a sequel to the 1991 film "The Silence of the Lambs", was written by David Mamet and Steven Zaillian. In it, the plot follows disgraced FBI special agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore); she attempts to apprehend cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) before his surviving victim, Mason Verger (Oldman), captures him. Hopkins reprises his role as Lecter, while Moore replaces Jodie Foster as Starling and Gary Oldman plays Verger. Besides Hopkins, Moore, and Oldman, other stars include Ray Liotta, Frankie R. Faison, Giancarlo Giannini and Francesca Neri.
"Hannibal" was produced by Dino De Laurentiis, Martha De Laurentiis, and Ridley Scott. The cinematography was by John Mathieson, editing by Pietro Scalia, and music by Hans Zimmer. Scott Free Productions, Universal Pictures, and Dino De Laurentiis Co. performed all of the film production. Distribution was by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (USA) and United International Pictures (International).
The critical response to the film was mixed. Nonetheless, it was a box office success, grossing $351.6 million on a budget of $87 million.
Oldman (b. March 1958) was raised in London, England. He is an actor and filmmaker who is well known for his versatility and intense acting style. His films have grossed over $11 billion worldwide.
