George V was King of the United Kingdom 1910-1936. What was the first name of his youngest son?
George V and his wife, Mary of Teck, had six children, whose names and titles are as follows (in birth order):
-- Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David (who became King Edward VIII)
-- Albert Frederick Arthur George (who became King George VI)
-- Victoria Alexandra Alice Mary (Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood)
-- Henry William Frederick Albert (Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester)
-- George Edward Alexander Edmund (Prince George, Duke of Kent)
-- John Charles Francis (Prince John of Wales)
Prince John cuts a sad and lonely figure in the 20th century chapter of the history of British royalty. He was born 12 July 1905 in York Cottage, on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, UK. By his fourth birthday John suffered the first of many epileptic seizures and showed signs of a disability, believed to have been autism. His illness was disclosed to the public only after his death.
For most of John’s life he had the role of a fully-fledged member of the family and was present with them in public. He was particularly close to his brother George, three years older than him (see picture). However, as John's condition deteriorated, he was sent to live at Sandringham House in 1916 and was kept away from the public eye. There, he was cared for by his governess, "Lala" Bill, and befriended local children whom his mother had gathered to be his playmates.
Following a severe seizure John died at Sandringham on 18 January 1919. He was just thirteen and a half.
