Cardinal Thomas Wolsey started building Hampton Court Palace in 1515.

By 1528 he had fallen out of favour with the King, Henry VIII and either gave Hampton Court to Henry as a gift , or Henry seized it from him, accounts differ.

Henry VIII continued to expand Hampton Court and used it extensively until his death in 1547.

Henry was succeeded first by his son, Edward VI, and then by both his daughters in turn. Mary I had her honeymoon there, and her successor Elizabeth I continued to use and expand Hampton Court. It remained in use as a Royal Palace until the reign of King George II in 1727.

It was opened to the public during the reign of Queen Victoria in 1838.

In more recent times it has been used for the following films : "A Man for All Seasons", " John Adams", "To Kill a King","Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides","Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" and for the live action film of Disney's "Cinderella".

In 2017 Hampton Court Palace was still a major tourist attraction, with just under 1 million annual visitors.
