Henri-Charles Manguin is closely associated with what artistic movement?
Henri-Charles Manguin (1874 -1949) was a close friend of Henri Matisse and met him when both were students at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was greatly influenced by the Impressionist Movement and went on to exhibit at the Salon des Independants and Salon d'Autumne in 1902. Many of his bright and lovely paintings were of Mediterranean landscapes. His famous painting of 1903, 'Still Life with Copper Pitcher' is considered by many to be one of the greatest paintings from this period in the still life genre.
In 1905 he made a mark for himself by exhibiting in the Salon d'Automne and was grouped with the Fauvists who were described as "Donatello among the beasts" by reviewer Louis Vauxcelles. Fauvism is characterized by a radical use of bright often unnatural colours to express emotion. Fauvism as a movement was short lived but it had a big influence on subsequent artists and especially the German expressionists. The brilliant colours were achieved often by applying paint directly from the tube to the canvas to express light and space.
