Maude Findlay (Bea Arthur) made her first appearance on the TV comedy "All in the Family" in December 1971. She came on the show in the second season episode, "Cousin Maude's Visit". Maude played the role of Edith Bunker's cousin.

Maude was visiting the Bunkers in order to care for Edith; she disliked Edith's husband, Archie Bunker. They (Archie and Maude} were known for getting on each other's nerves. She had very strong liberal political opinions and Archie was mostly conservative in all of his thinking. Maude was also an ally of Edith's daughter, Gloria (Sally Struthers) and her husband, Mike (Rob Reiner). These three individuals had ideas and political viewpoints that made them kindred spirits.
