On July 24, 2002, nine miners became trapped underground at the Quecreek Mine in Somerset county, Pennsylvania. They were mining in an area near an abandoned and flooded mine. Unfortunately, the map that they were using was not updated, and they breached the flooded mine, causing the mine in which they were working, to take on water. They were able to notify workers in another area to evacuate and they went to higher ground. Twice they tried to escape, but we're unable to because of the water. The workers from the other area escaped and notified the proper authorities of their entrapment. Rescue workers immediately started to rescue the miners. High capacity pumps were installed into the entrances of the mine to pump the water out. A bore hole was drilled 240 feet to supply air to the trapped miners. A 30 inch drill bit was located in Clarksburg, West Virginia, and brought by escort to the Quecreek Mine. After drilling about half way, the bit broke and a device, made in 3 hours, was used to recover the broken bit. Rescuers were able to locate a 26 inch bit closeby and then continued to drill into the mine. Approximately 77 hours after the miners were trapped, the first miner, Randy Fogle, who had been experiencing chest pains, was pulled out of the mine in a mesh capsule made for the rescue. He was followed by Harry "Blaine" Mayhugh, Jr., Thomas "Tucker" Foy, John Unger, John Phillippi, Ron Heilman, Dennis J. Hall, Robert Pugh, Jr. and lastly Mark Popernack.
