As long as men and women have walked the earth, one of the main staples of diet has been meat. All kinds of meat. Before fire, it was eaten raw, after fire it was cooked in various ways, and then came the barbecue.

If the average meat eating human lives to the age of 80 he/she will have consumed approximately 7,000 animals. This would include: 11 cows, 27 pigs, 2,400 chickens, 80 turkeys, 30 sheep and 4,500 fish. If rabbits, ducks, geese, goats, prawns, squid and other small animals are included then the total rises closer to 7,500.

In 2012, only 5% of American adults considered themselves to be vegetarians, according to Gallup. That leaves a whole lot of people eating animals.
