Europe’s second longest river (after the Volga) is the Danube. It rises in the Black Forest in Germany and flows 1,780 miles (2,860 kilometres) through nine other countries before flowing into the Black Sea.

The capital cities of four countries are on the river: Vienna (Austria), Bratislava (Slovakia), Budapest (Hungary) and Belgrade (Serbia). several other major cities are also served by the river.

In addition to the ten countries it flows through, there are nine others touching the river’s Black Sea basin.
