On 1 June 2018, the Liberian-flagged container ship ‘YM Efficiency’ lost 83 containers in heavy weather about 30 kilometres southeast of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

The 'YM Efficiency', making its way from Taiwan to Sydney, was hit by heavy swells about 30km off the coast of Port Stephens, which toppled the containers into the sea and damaged another 30. Aerial footage of the stern of the vessel on Wednesday 6th of June, 2018 shows a section of containers lying on an angle along with several badly crushed containers.

Due to the precarious position of some of the containers still on board, the unloading of the ship was expected to take up to a week, according to authorities.

Director of NSW Maritime Services Angus Mitchell said boats had been deployed to the region to help in the search. "It'll start recovering anything that's found on top of the water and in that very first layer of the water column," Mr Mitchell said. "We also have some divers ready on standby and we're just waiting for the conditions and the visibility to improve."

Just one container has been recovered, but eighty-two containers remain missing — two were spotted initially, but have not been seen since.

However car parts, furniture, kitchen suites and bags of lollies from the containers have washed ashore.

Authorities said they expected more debris to litter the beaches after tides recede.

There were around 100 people on the beaches and on the rocks carrying out the clean-up.
