How many continents start with the letter "A"?

I hate to be pedantic but why can't people realise that America is not one continent, sorry I am not in the best of moods today.

North America starts with N and South America starts with S

There are seven continents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.

I hesitated in answering, and brought the double chance into play, because authors are not infallible. I know that four of the continents start with the letter A. I didn't know whether the Americas would be combined (as one commenter claimed). At least the number 6 wasn't an option, so the Americas weren't each counted as beginning with A.

Diana Forsythe, I always learned it as 2 continents. Central America is not a continent; it is a region of North America. If you still believe that it is all one continent, then I'm sorry, but you are incorrect. It is not a matter of opinion.

Jerry Edwards, While I appreciate you efforts to explain the confusion, I cannot concur. First, the 2 American continents begin with the letters "N" and "S". Proper alphabetization dictates that proper nouns are filed in the order of the first part of a multiple word name. Second, there is no "continent" called "Oceania". It is a region. The country of Australia is the largest landmass on the CONTINENT of Australia, which includes peripheral islands, but not all of Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia, which are considered a part of a region known as Oceania. Oceania is generally a term of convenience, but cannot be considered accurate when referring to continental plates. Continents are defined by the science of plate tectonics. Australia is a continent; Oceania is not.

Rafi Manory, The Americas ARE two distinct continents separated at the 211 mile (339km) border of Panama and Colombia. Europe and Asia are more of a single landmass than that, with a border of 1,300 miles (2,100km)!
