filmnut, it is Alaska. Some of the Alaskan Islands are so far west that they cross the dateline and are east. This is a great question for trivia, as Alaska is both the westernmost and easternmost state in the United States.

This question has various answers going by different sites.

Wording was an issue. I was thinking in the pacific the international date line, thus not including Russia and Alaska. I was thinking countries like France with its islands off of Newfoundland and other similar things.

My research shows a different answer. Agree with Louis David Huss -- poorly worded question. It asked for one thing and gave answer for two. Not good.

Countries that lies in both Hemispheres of East and West There are eight countries that are intersected by Prime Meridian and hence they lie in both East and West Hemispheres. These countries are – United Kingdom, France, Spain, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali and Togo.

Sadasivan Suryanarayanan, I also found it quite confusing at first. Especially from the explanation. Then I read the comment by Daphne Quarters, above. Straight away, I understood it better.

I knew this from researching British-born American baseball players. We wanted to see if the Wright brothers (George and Harry) were the first baseball players from the Eastern hemisphere.

sorry the question is rather very confusing..coming to the Western Hemisphere itself we can see more countries that too from Africa..me being a layman its rather difficult to comprehend..to me the question should be more clear for a layman like to answer..

I'll stick with 12 for the time being.

Early in my USAF career, I crossed the 180th meridian (international Date Line) in mid-Pacific by sea on the way to Guam. Two years later, crossed it by air on the way back home. Later, I crossed the 0 or Prime/Greenwich Meridian by air from London to Paris on a two week leave and recrossed it by boat-train over the channel back to London from Dunkirk. My most vivid memory of that trip is the sheer beauty of the gleaming white cliffs of Dover from the channel at dawn.

I am stuck on one point: How can the USA be in both Hemispheres. Does it have something to do with Hawaii & Alaska, the Aleutian Islands and our territories ?
