How many countries lie on the equator?
The equator divides Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. It is just under 25,000 miles long. Because the Earth bulges at the centre, the equator is the longest of our planet’s five main circles of latitude, each one based on the relationship between the Earth’s axis of rotation and the Earth’s orbit around the sun.
Thirteen countries lie on the equator. These are, in alphabetical order:
1. Brazil
2. Colombia
3. Ecuador
4. Gabon
5. Indonesia
6. Kenya
7. Kiribati
8. Maldives
9. Republic of the Congo
10. São Tomé and Principe
